Golden Retriever Rescue of Houston

Golden Retriever Rescue of Houston (GRRH) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) founded in June 2003. We are an all-volunteer group dedicated to the rescue and placement of Golden Retrievers in Houston, Texas and the surrounding area.

We do not have a physical location but rather operate our mission out of volunteers’ homes.

  1. Please read our Adoption Requirements before you submit an Adoption Application.
  2. Complete and submit an Adoption Application.
  3. Please allow at least two weeks to process your application.
  4. An adoption coordinator will be assigned to review your application.
  5. Your adoption coordinator will contact you to arrange a phone interview.
  6. We will follow up on your vet, personal references, and landlord if you are renting.
  7. We will notify you about the outcome of your application.
  8. If your application is approved, you can look at the Available Dogs on our website and contact your adoption coordinator to talk about the dog(s) you are interested in meeting. If you and your adoption coordinator mutually agree that you may be a good match for a dog, your application will be forwarded to the foster family.
  9. If the foster thinks you would be a good match for the dog, you will be contacted to set up a time for you to visit the dog. An appointment to meet a dog does not guarantee you will be selected to adopt the dog. We look for the best match for the needs of the Golden and the adopter.
  10. Everyone in your household including children and any dogs you have must attend this meeting. It is important that this be a good match for everyone.
  11. The foster family and our adoption team lead will have the final say in selecting the forever home for the dog.
  12. If you are selected to adopt, you will pay the adoption fee and sign our Adoption Contract prior to taking your Golden home with you.
  13. Read our helpful guide "Integrating Your New Pet".
  14. We will email you a copy of your dog's medical records.
  15. You will be advised to take your new family member to the vet within two weeks of adoption for a check-up.
  16. After adopting from GRRH, please stay in touch. We love to receive updates and photographs of our GRRH alumni and their family.
  17. To generate interest and support for our organization, we may ask for permission to use your name, your Golden’s name, and photographs for social media, GRRH events, and brochures. You may decline such use or impose limitation in this area.

Based on our collective years of experience with rescue, the Board of Directors of GRRH requires full cooperation with each of the requirements for adopting a Golden from our program.

  1. Age — You must be at least 21 years of age to submit an Adoption Application.
  2. Adoption Application Fee — You must pay a $20.00 non-refundable adoption application fee to help cover our costs.
  3. Introduction to family and household members — All family/household members including current dogs are required to meet your potential new family member in the presence of a GRRH volunteer prior to the adoption being finalized. It is important that this be a good match for everyone.
  4. Signed Contract prior to release — You must sign the Adoption Contract before the dog is released to the adopter. By signing the Adoption Contract, the adopter agrees to abide by the terms and conditions of the Adoption Contract. (You may review a PDF version of our Adoption Contract here).
  5. Adoption Fee — The adoption fee must be paid before the dog is released to you. The adoption fee is $400 for dogs under eight (8) years old and $200 for dogs eight (8) and older.
  6. Veterinary Care — You must provide regular veterinary care for your adopted Golden. This includes an annual physical exam, vaccinations, heartworm test, and keeping your dog on heartworm preventative year-round.
  7. Housing and Fence — You must agree to keep your adopted Golden indoors in a climate-controlled environment. The dog must be in a fenced area when allowed outside. You must not leave your adopted Golden outside for extended periods of time and never leave the dog outside when you are not at home. You must agree to keep your Golden on a leash when outside a fenced area and not allow the dog to roam freely.
  8. Animal Control and Local Laws — The adopted dog must be provided a safe home and proper care in accordance with all current and future state and local laws, and ordinances where resides. Should the dog be picked up for any reason by animal-related law enforcement and is deemed to be in danger in its current home, every effort will be made by GRRH to take possession of the dog.
  9. Return — If for any reason you can no longer keep your adopted dog, the dog must be returned to GRRH. We are committed to the dogs we rescue and will always accept an adopted GRRH dog back. The adopted dog shall not be sold or given away to anyone (this includes friends and family members). If a friend or family member wants to take ownership of the dog, they must contact GRRH and submit an application to adopt. The adopted dog shall not be surrendered to a shelter, animal control agency, or another rescue group other than GRRH.
  10. Refund — If a dog is returned to GRRH within 14 days in the same or better condition as when adopted, the adoption fee will be returned. Under any other circumstances, the adoption fee is non-refundable.
  11. Hold Harmless — Adopter agrees to indemnify and hold harmless GRRH, its members and representatives against any all claims, known or unknown, now or hereafter, arising in connection with this dog. Court Cost — In addition to returning the dog, the adopter agrees to pay GRRH for all expenses, including court costs and reasonable attorney's fees for enforcing the terms of the adoption contract and for reclaiming the dog.

GRRH is dedicated to the welfare of the Goldens we rescue. Our greatest reward is to see the dogs we rescue placed in a new home where they will be safe, happy, and loved forever. We want our applicants to know that the dogs we rescue come from a variety of backgrounds. Some have been well cared for by their previous owner, others may come from an environment of neglect or abuse, and some whose background we know little about. We do our best to get to know the dogs while they are cared for in foster homes but there could be behaviors and characteristics (good and bad) that surface only after the dog has been living with his/her new forever family. In our experience, most dogs will need some basic training. A patient and loving owner can make all the difference in bringing out the loyal and loving nature of a Golden.

  • To be considered as an adoptive home, you must meet the Adoption Requirements.
  • The adoption fee is $400.00 for dogs under eight (8) years old and $200.00 for dogs eight (8) years and older. The adoption fees partially cover the expenses incurred for dogs in our care including veterinary examinations, spay/neuter, and heartworm prevention.
  • GRRH dogs are placed only with approved adopters.
  • We do not place dogs on a first come, first serve basis. Placements are made based on which adopter is the best match for the dog.
  • We reserve the right to refuse approval of any applicant.
  • Submission of your application does not guarantee the adoption of a Golden from GRRH nor does it guarantee the adoption of a specific dog you may have seen on our website or Facebook page.
  • Adoptions to applicants with children under the age of five (5) are made on a case-by-case basis.
  • Adoptions to applicants living in an apartment, condo or house without a fenced yard are made on a case-by-case basis.
  • An approved adoption application is valid for one (1) year.
